And then there are the people who use "Gray" as the spelling of their surname when it was "Grey" up to the mid 1700s! My own line used Grey until they moved from Cherry Burton to Holme on the Wolds (all East Yorkshire Riding) from which time all the Parish Register entries use the spelling Gray. My great grandmother was Grace Gray daughter of Robert Gray and Elizabeth Mary Ann Routledge. Robert emigrated to Canada in 1832 with his younger brother William and as is the way with my lines they all came to Middlesex County, Ontario.
