The Imperial War Museum has a War Memorials Register – presently with almost 70,000 memorials in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.  The site estimates that there are about 100,000 war memorials of various types, not just monuments, in the UK.

If you find a memorial for a location of interest it's worth Googling to see if the names on it have been transcribed. You might also want to check www.roll-of-honour.com/ which, however, does not have detailed photos of individual's names on the monuments.

Mark Herber, author of Ancestral Trails, has a new website, war-memorials.co.uk dedicated to photographing, transcribing and preserving war memorial records. At launch it has "over 20,000 detailed photographs of more than 1,200 memorials, commemorating over 270,000 people, with their names (and the memorial’s information about them) transcribed and indexed."

If you're looking for someone who should be on a memorial, but don't know where, this may be a place to start. You need to subscribe to search, starting at £5.00. It lacks a list of the memorials included.
