The bulk of the file was requests from the Genealogical Society, later the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at 80 North Main St., in Salt Lakes City, for specific genealogical information. Where the query could be answered directly this was done; and if not a reference to a for hire person was given.
Unlike today, where such a query is answered by a list of people in those days a specific person is named.
In 1950 and 1952 that person is C.G. Crouse, 125 Concord Street in Ottawa. In 1956 Miss W. Desrosiers of 8 Tormey St. Ottawa, is named. From 1955 to 1960 the chosen one is Miss Esther Osborne of 18 Prince Albert St. in Ottawa.
Does anyone know of these genealogists?
Other requests in the file were in 1958 from: the National Genealogical Society of Washington D.C., and the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research. In the same year Reginald Smith, President of the Vancouver District L.D.S. Genealogical Society at 350 E 55th Ave, Vancouver 15, wrote with the letterhead showing an affiliation with the Alberta S. Gen Soc and the L.M.U Gen Soc. Anyone know of these?
Finally there was a query from the Houston Genealogical Forum of 8112 Milridge, Houston 17, TX.

Dr. Harold F. Powell and I served on the Board of the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History (ISBGFH) of which I am a Charter and Founding Member as well. Dr. Powell was an authority of the Detroit River area and wrote books and items for the Detroit Society which was formed in the 1930's and still exists. Dick Doherty, another recognised Irish authority and frequent speaker at OGS events is a current active member of the Detorit Society.
ReplyDeleteThe Alberta S. Gen. Soc. will I imagine be connected to the LDS Temple at Carston. The Vancover District LDS Genealogical Society will also be associated with the Vanacouver LDS Church - and may not have been for formally recognized group. LMU??? Currently that is Licoln Memorial University - but could also stand for "Lower Mainland"? Or "something Mormon University" or "Latter Day Saints" something Utah?
