Buried in a BBC story, Migration to Scotland fuels population rise, is the news that Scotland's Registrar General Duncan Macniven is retiring.
Registrants at the 2009 BIFHSGO conference will remember Macniven as one of the headline speakers, and for his approachability, quite unlike the stereotypical senior civil servant.
I have admired the emphasis on making timely information from his office available, including the lists of most popular baby names released before the end of the year.
The information in the BBC item on the background to how Scotland's population has risen to the highest level since 1977 with a boost from migration from the rest of the UK is typical.
Best wishes for an active retirement.
