The Great War 1914-18 Magazine

One of the recent additions to the Ancestry.co.uk collection is page images of the periodical The Great War: The Standard History of the All-Europe Conflict. Published from 1914 to 1919 by the Amalgamated Press, it was co-edited by Herbert Wrigley Wilson and John Alexander Hammerton. It's huge with photos, maps and other visual material on almost every page, many whole-page images.

As a periodical it was issued in parts, numbered from 1 to 272, combined into 13 volumes. As presented by Ancestry there are 7,717 pages. While the original index is reproduced in the first few pages, and it is extensive, it provides references to the original volume number and page, not Ancestry's page numbering. It's not easy to find a page referenced in the index.

Find the item of interest in the index and note the volume and page number. Find the Ancestry page number for the start of that volume from the table and add the page number from the index. It should get you close to the right Ancestry-numbered page.
