The next in what has proved so far to be an exceptionally enjoyable Shannon lecture series is "The Tavern Company: Food, Drink, and the Bonds of Sociability in a Colonial Society" presented by Julia Roberts, Department of History, University of Waterloo.
The presentation is likely based on her first book "In Mixed Company: Taverns and Public Life in Upper Canada" which "explores taverns as colonial public space and how men and women of diverse backgrounds – Native and newcomer, privileged and labouring, white and non-white – negotiated a place for themselves within them. The stories that emerge unsettle comfortable certainties about who belonged where in colonial society."
As with previous lectures, it takes place in the Humanities Lecture Theatre, 303 Paterson Hall, from 3:00-4:30 pm followed by a reception in the Department of History Lobby, 4th floor Paterson Hall. All welcome.
