Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians. Those south of the border will have to wait.
Coming from a county where the holiday isn't celebrated I have no childhood memories of the celebration. Harvest Festival celebrated on the Sunday nearest the full Moon closest to the autumn equinox, was an event when the church was decorated with the bounty of the land.
According to what I read recently, Thanksgiving in Canada was paired with Armistice Day for many years. Armistice Day was the closest Monday to November 11. Then for several years Thanksgiving was sometime in October. We only got it all sorted out in 1957 when it was decided that it would be the 2nd Monday in October.
ReplyDeleteThough I was born in Canada I lived far away from extended family and I have no memory of Thanksgiving celebrations as a child.
