Salisbury Wills Index, 1464-1858 added at Findmypast

The major British addition this week at Findmypast is over 90,000 records of the Wiltshire, Salisbury Wills Index, 1464-1858. It is a British Record Society (BRS) index produced as part of the Wiltshire Wills Project, a collaboration between Wiltshire and Swindon Archives and the BRS.

The original records were kept by various ecclesiastical courts including the Bishop's Consistory Court, the Archdeaconries of Wiltshire and Sarum, the Dean's and Sub-Dean's court and a variety of smaller jurisdictions covering either a single parish or group of parishes attached to various lay or clerical dignitaries. As a result, there are records for 29 different jurisdictions covering the whole of Wiltshire, parts of Dorset, Hampshire and Berkshire and the Devon parish of Uffculme.

Each record includes a transcript of the index that will usually list the individual's name, status or occupation, residence, the year the will was made, the document type and reference.
