An upcoming Spring lecture, presented by the Goulbourn Township Historical Society, features local author, Anne Raina speaking on the former Royal Ottawa Sanatorium, From 1910 until the 1950's, the spread of tuberculosis, a highly infectious disease, affected many Canadians. The prescribed treatment included fresh air, good food, and clean surroundings. In Ottawa, the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium was the centre for tuberculosis treatment..
In the Raina family, Anne, her sister Clara, their father, and six of their siblings were admitted to the Ottawa"San". Anne and her late sister, Clara, have published an account of their early experiences at the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium.
Copies of "Clara's Rib, with illustrations by Julia Taylor, of Munster, Ontario," will be available for sale. This is a drop-in event, open to everyone with registration. Refreshments available.

Private Sully Goes to War, Saturday, April 23, 2016 - 2:00pm

100 years ago this April, Elmo Sully of Metcalfe joined up to fight in World War I. For the next 3 years, he wrote letters and postcards home to his sweetheart Fannie. Based on his letters, the book Private Sully Goes to War brings to life the Canadian soldier’s experience of World War I. Along with telling Private Sully’s story, author Jane Cooper will discuss the process of researching, writing, and publishing the book.
