It's easy to forget there are two sets of birth, marriage and death indexes for England and Wales. The local register offices have indexes which are closest to the source, and so generally more reliable. The much better known are the national coverage GRO indexes most of which are now available through FreeBMD at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Go to UKBMD at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ for transcriptions of some of the local indexes. These are continually being added to. LancashireBMD just added:
- 13,758 births for Bolton RD comprising: Farnworth (1935-1935) Little Bolton (1898-1906) South West Bolton (1903-1907).
- 18,631 births for Manchester RD amended to include mother's maiden name, comprising: Manchester East Central (1939-1950) Manchester West Central (1939-1950)
- 15,170 deaths for Manchester RD comprising Manchester South (1936-1950)
- 4,271 marriages for Rochdale RD comprising: Heywood, St James (1926-1977) Calderbrook, St James (1926-1985) Wardleworth, St James (1926-1972) Littleborough, Holy Trinity (1926-1974) Shore, St Barnabas (1926-1973).
