The day after Labour Day, back to school, makes it timely for a reminder about some of the educational opportunities being offered by Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
HANDS-ON ANCESTRY.CA LIBRARY EDITION
Wednesdays 2-4 pm, September 21-October 5
Instructor: Carol Nichols
This course at the Toronto Reference Library will help you use Ancestry.ca, one of the largest databases of Canadian and International records. Discover how to search the complete collection or narrow your focus to just one geographic area or one record source. You will learn how to assess your evidence, look for leads for further searches and build your family tree.
HANDS-ON EARLY ONTARIO LAND RECORDS
Thursdays 4-7 pm, October 6-20
Instructor: Jane E. MacNamara
This course at the Archives of Ontario is designed for both family and local historians. Learn how to use the various finding aids and indexes to access the vast collection of land records at the Archives of Ontario to document an ancestor's acquisition of (or attempt to acquire) land in Upper Canada.
BASIC GENEALOGY & FAMILY HISTORY
Wednesdays 2-4 pm, October 19-December 7
Instructor: Jane E. MacNamara
This eight-week course at Eglinton St George's United Church in North Toronto is for those just beginning to research or looking to upgrade basic research skills. It will cover terminology, types of sources, the use of on-line genealogy sites, libraries and archives, including LDS Family History Centres, and record-keeping. Learn to follow the clues, evaluate the evidence, and "think like a genealogist"!
INTRODUCTION TO GENETIC GENEALOGY
Wednesdays 6:15-8:15 pm, October 12-26
Instructor: Linda Reid
This brand new course at the Toronto Reference Library is for genealogists with well-researched family trees who wish to confirm and expand them with genetic evidence. There will be a brief overview of the different types of DNA tests available to genealogists, but the emphasis will be on how to use Family Finder, the autosomal DNA test from Family Tree DNA. Participants will benefit the most if they have already taken this test.
