This newly published four volume set mentions that about half of the 20,000 most common family names are locative, meaning they come from places; a quarter are relationship names, a fifth are nicknames and about 8% are occupational.

Sigh. At that price, I wonder if our city central library will buy it...? Looks quite wonderful - I'd love to browse in it!
I've put it as a suggested purchase to OPL. No doubt they'll look hard at it.
