John, I've lost a little of my confidence in FreeBMD due to a recent experience. When I wanted to find a death of Mary Willows in 1838 in Lissington, Lincolnshire - having found the exact date from a newspaper entry in the Stamford Mercury from the newspaper archive at FindMyPast -- the only one I can find on FreeBMD in all of Lincolnshire is for an infant dying age 0. Yet when I went to the General Record Office and searched, I easily found the correct registration of the 46-year-old woman I sought. So if FreeBMD has skipped one individual, how many more are also missing? I would now advise everyone to use the GRO search instead, at least if it's for a direct-line ancestor and you want to be really certain.
It's always a good practice to check all available sources, especially when it comes to transcriptions. None are perfect.
