Enter a church in the UK and you see rolls of honour memorializing local fallen heroes and plaques to ancient, and sometimes not so ancient, local worthies. Finding an ancestor's name on one of these may be a surprise find when you visit.
The September issue of UK magazine Family History Monthly, www.familyhistorymonthly.com, in a Web Watch news column by Eric D. Probert, profiles church recordings of the National Association for Decorative and Fine Art Societies. According to Probert the Association is producing inventories of all places of worship in England, Scotland and Wales for memorials relating to major military conflicts. Each memorial is transcribed and compiled into a book with illustrations and photographs. More than 1,400 churches have been recorded so far.
