Tithe maps, usually large scale, include the boundaries of fields, woods, roads and rivers and locations of buildings. They can show you whether there was a house on the site of your own home, who lived in it and what the land was used for. Most date from the 1840s and follow old parish boundaries.
Thanks to a project of the East Sussex Record Office, and partners, you can now search and view tithe maps, broken down by parish, for East Sussex and Brighton & Hove. They are free to the public and placed side by side with the modern maps. Zoom in for incredible detail.
For West Sussex the tithe maps have also been digitized but are not so easily accessible. Access at libraries across the county or by purchase of a CD. See http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/leisure/record_office_and_archives/collections_and_research/maps.aspx
Other counties with tithe maps online are Cheshire, Devon, Norfolk, Northumberland (some), West Yorkshire (Leeds)
