80 years ago today The Blitz, a German aerial bombing campaign against the United Kingdom during the Second World War, began. Over the course of the next eight months, to 11 May, over 40,000 civilians were killed. They are commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
From 7 September 1940 London was systematically bombed by the Luftwaffe for 56 of the following 57 days and nights, most notably a large daylight attack against London on 15 September.
