Bombardier Peter McRae Carruthers, the fourth WW1 soldier to be buried at Beechwood Cemetery, died a century ago on April 8, 1915. A native of Ottawa born on 13 September 1881 to John and Margaret Carruthers, he died suddenly of heart failure at Lethbridge, Alberta, while in charge of the Guard at the 20th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. According to an article in the 9 April 1915 Ottawa Citizen he had been scheduled to go to Europe with the second Canadian contingent.
