On copying family history information

The BIFHSGO member who blogs as Persephone went on a bit of a genealogical rant on Friday in an item Someone is WRONG on the internet. If you've posted information, and sometimes just sent information to someone, only to have it misused, you'll find thoughts expressed by a kindred spirit in the post.

That was wonderful John. I have had similar issues where I sent information to a very distant relation in Australia, who agreed in advance that he would never post it on-line, which he did the moment he received the information. I ranted in just about the same way, and warn all family members doing their own research to avoid him. Cheers.

I too sent information to a distant relative. This information was pure speculation on my part which I had made clear to her on the phone before sending it (I thought). Sure enough she posted it on the internet - now the info, which turned out to be wrong, is out there for all to misuse. I learned my lesson.

I have had a lot less trouble since I deleted my tree from Ancestry and put it on Rootsweb's WorldConnect with downloads disallowed.

Thank you ... thank you ... thank you for posting this article. Not only did it strike a cord but so did her reactions. I don't have a tree on Ancestry any more but gave some to another person whose tree USED to be open and my photos were taken from hers.UGH!! It also happened to me on genesreunited.co.uk ... and these people were no relation! I complained to genesreunited as well as the person. They deleted it but I found it all on ancestry.ca 2 years later! The only joy I got is they copied my early errors!!!
