John Dowsley Reid, no relation, was born in Prescott, Ontario, 150 years ago on 1 January 1859. He represented the federal riding of Granville in the House of Commons from 1891 to 1921 including serving as an influential minister in the Borden administration during the First World War. He was appointed to the Senate that same year where he served until his death in 1929.
He was the son of John Reid, an Irish immigrant. His mother was Jane Dowsley.
He married Ephie Elizabeth Labatt, a granddaughter of John Kinder Labatt (1803 - 1866) founder of the brewing company of that name, on 25 January 1899.
