Honorary Major William Alexander "Sandy" Cameron died on 24 February 1917 in Ashland, North Carolina.
Born in Thurso, Quebec on 24 November 1866, he was the fourth son of the late John Archibald and Alexandrina Cameron of Stadacona Hall, Ottawa.
He had gone south for the winter owing to poor health, diabetes and pulmonary tuberculous, which had caused him to return from England and service with the 77th Battalion of the CEF the previous September. He previously served with Ottawa's 43rd Regiment.
Cameron was a leading coal and lumber merchant. Lauded in the Ottawa Journal as a most likeable gentleman and sportsman, he had been in the forefront of local sports as president and playing member of the Ottawa Rough Riders, active in golf and rowing.
He is interred in Sec. 50. Lot 4-7N at Beechwood Cemetery.
