This half-hour fully illustrated talk by Map Curator, Chris Fleet, will look at the most important maps showing the development of Edinburgh between 1750 and 1850. During this time, maps underwent a major transformation in form and content reflecting the new values inherent in the creation of Edinburgh’s New Town. Who made these maps, why, and for whom, and how far we should trust these maps as a true reflection of the reality down on the ground?

Thanks for the heads up on this one. It would have been nice to have a little more warning. Your post was timed 8:30 am on June 2nd and I read it at 11:45 am which meant I had to scramble to sign up as the lecture started at Noon my time. It was well worth the effort as I learned a lot about early maps and map making. The most important fact was that many maps of the 18th and early 19th century show proposed development which did not always take place. And here I thought maps only showed what was there.
Any possibility this could be shown again? I've just picked this message up now, 7:30 pm PST.
