Perhaps if like me there are more pubs than palaces in your family history, you will find interesting the pub history site mentioned by Gail Roger in her talk at Saturday's BIFHSGO meeting.

The Pub history site at deadpubs.co.uk is "a major historical street directory which lists mainly Pubs, beer retailers, taverns and hotels; and street name changes between about 1840 and 1940." It covers pubs in the home counties and a few others: London, Essex, Kent, Suffolk, Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Middlesex, Devon, BuckinghamshireGloucestershireHampshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Oxfordshire, Cornwall, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset.
